ASC Hosts Sony-Sponsored Master Class for Content Creators
The event featured in-depth sessions on lighting and shooting in a variety of scenarios.
On May 28, the ASC hosted a one-day master class for content creators, sponsored by Sony, at its historic Clubhouse in Hollywood. During the event, a small group of students were immersed in two-hour sessions instructed by ASC members Patrick Cady, Charlie Lieberman, Sam McCurdy and Claudio Miranda, as well as cinematographer Oren Soffer.
The class included sessions that covered lighting and shooting on location (led by McCurdy), for still photography (led by Lieberman), in low-light situations (led by Miranda), and for portraiture (led by Cady and Soffer).
Among those in attendance was filmmaker Andy To, who was invited by Sony to test its new FX2 full-frame cinema camera on site, and documented his experience meeting with instructors, students and ASC staff. In a video posted to his YouTube channel, To shared his biggest takeaways from each session: the importance of imbuing each shot with emotional purpose, how cinematographers can gain staying power by working resourcefully, and the intangible qualities captured when shooting outside of a synthetic environment.
